Photo: Carol Spagnuola Over the weekend, Pilgrimage Music & Arts Festival took over the park at Harlinsdale in the beautiful town of Franklin, Tennessee for two full days of non-stop music. Though the heat was formidable, the weather didn’t stop festival-goers, with both days of the festival selling out and many folks staking claim at the front of the festival’s four stages to get close spots for Justin Timberlake, Eddie Vedder, Ryan Adams, Mavis Staples, The Avett Brothers, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, The Revivalists, and more.Following the death of the iconic soul legend, Charles Bradley, Pilgrimage Festival saw a number of shout-outs and touching tributes to the late singer. Shovels and Rope dedicated “Save The World” to him, while Longhorn Slim‘s “Song For Sid” and its line “Where do the great ones go after they’re gone,” served as a way to honor Bradley.Highlights of the festival included an electrifying set from Gary Clark Jr., which saw an amazing cover of the Beatles’ “Come Together”; Trombone Shorty’s New Orleans’ funk set, featuring a cover of Green Day’s “Brain Stew” with the horns laying out the traditionally vocal melody; and The Revivalists’ high-octane performance led by David Shaw. Ryan Adams laid out a smokin’ set as well, working in numbers from his new album Prisoner, in addition to classics like “Fix It” from his previous album, Cardinology. One sweet moment from Pilgrimage Festival this past weekend was during Amanda Shire’s set. Her husband, Jason Isbell, played guitar and sung backup vocals for the duration of the show. The love between the two was clear, with him frequently looking over and smiling at her in addition to handing her sunglasses mid-set when he noticed the sun was in her eyes.On the other hand, Eddie Vedder put on a powerful, more politically charged performance, at one point taking a knee and saying, “Thirty minutes would be how long it would take North Korea, and how did we get here? Fuck fuck Fuck!” Although there was a political tone, he focused more on expression through his music. However, Vedder later brought up a young boy named Jack West who he had met earlier in the day after thinking his PJMC shirt was cool. Vedder and West sang “Society” and brought the house down. For the main headliner, Justin Timberlake put on a spirited performance to the packed audience. During his headlining set, the pop icon brought out Chris Stapleton and his wife for three numbers—”Tennessee Whiskey,” “Fire Away,” and “Sometimes I Cry”—as a special surprise. You can check out photos from Pilgrimage Music & Arts Festival below, courtesy of Carol Spagnuola.Pilgrimage Festival 2017 | Photos by Carol Spagnuola Photo: Carol Spags Photo: Carol Spagnuola Load remaining images

By Faith PeppersUniversity of GeorgiaAs this year’s drought drags on and on, prospects don’t look good for fall gardens. Collecting and using the rain we do get could be the answer.”Our local government, in their quest to address storm-water issues, encourages all citizens to implement storm-water control methods at their homes,” said former Clarke County 4-H’er Chip Felton, one of two Northeast District winners in the Georgia 4-H Leadership in Action project. In Felton’s project, he looked to a new twist on an age-old concept: rain barrels. He volunteered to lead a project making rain-collection barrels from donated soft drink barrels and give them to Clarke County residents.Felton met with the Athens-Clarke County storm-water education coordinator in November 2005. “We reviewed the steps for making rain barrels and identified design flaws,” he said. He came up with a plan that gave him “a better understanding of the need for action in the community.”And take action he did. During the winter, he tested design modifications that would give people better access to the collected water. He ended up using a low-cost addition to create a siphon effect. He recruited other teens and showed them how to make the barrels and use the needed power tools safely.”The barrels are made from recycled soft-drink syrup barrels donated by Coca-Cola,” he said. “The Athens-Clarke County storm-water department used grant funds to provide the materials” (faucets, drains, fittings) to make them.Standing water in rain barrels can invite unwanted pests such as mosquitoes. Felton enlisted the help of a local group that serves developmentally disabled people to cut mosquito screens to fit the barrel inlets. That helps keep mosquitoes from laying eggs in the barrels. They began making the barrels in March 2006, “working after school and on Saturdays,” Felton said. It takes about an hour and 45 minutes to build each barrel. “We completed 239 barrels for distribution to county residents over several months.”By August, all 239 were given away. Each came with written instructions and helpful hints on setup, mosquito control and the benefits of rain recycling. To make a rain barrel or start a community project of your own, here are the steps:Collect and clean the barrel.Drill holes of varying sizes for inlets, faucets and drains.Assemble a siphon and faucet.Vacuum the debris from the drilling, and install the faucets and drains. Cover the inlet with net to prevent mosquitoes.Place the barrel where it can catch the most rainwater runoff.”We were able to provide these collection barrels to Athens-Clarke County residents at no cost,” Felton said. “This allowed them to become an active component in the county’s storm-water control effort. The potential impact goes beyond the 239 homes which received the barrels.”Felton feels the project helps the community by diverting storm water that would otherwise become runoff. Storm water is the biggest contributor to nonpoint-source pollution of surface water, he said. Reducing it can help keep pollutants out of streams, lakes and rivers. The program also informed people about threats to surface water quality and showed ways, such as making rain gardens, to further control storm water.People could put the collected rainfall to outdoor uses, too, keeping accent plants and garden areas healthy. “This can save the homeowner money, as they’re not using potable water for outdoor uses,” he said, “It’s also a savings to the community by lessening the demand on water treatment facilities.”When he finished the project, Felton surveyed the community and found that many more residents wanted the barrels. He has a new shipment of containers on the way.To find out more about rain barrels or how to start a community rain barrel projects, call your county UGA Extension agent at 1-800-ASK-UGA1.

ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr Ask a credit union or community bank about their consumer base, and it starts out like a snappy joke: A well-educated, retired woman walks into a financial institution. She’s somewhere between 55 and 70. She loves all the staff and the staff knows everything about her. They know she suffers from osteoporosis and her husband will be retiring soon. Once she finishes the next round of physical therapy, the couple plans to take a 7-day cruise after they visit their grandkids. After all, little Mikey always comes first. They can’t miss seeing him make his first communion. When we begin to think about who we serve, we are compelled to tell these stories. These are the people we see in-branch. They are the people we have thoughtful interactions with. There is a caring, deep connection with these consumers. If you were asked the question, “Tell me about your members?” would you have a similar story to tell?Let’s dig a little deeper: If you represented an $83 million community financial institution serving 7,600 members/customers, is this story reflective of your membership base? Does it provide insight on who you want to serve or just simply what (who) you know? continue reading »

Just because one bank won’t lend to you doesn’t mean you can’t obtain finance, according to Haesley Cush. Picture: AAP/David ClarkI was in the city this week meeting with the genius’s at Apple after a midnight altercation between my bedside waterglass and my Mac Book Pro.Unfortunately the glass of water won and it would need a complete over haul.So after I was informed to fix it I’d be $1200 lighter I decided to walk back to the office in New Farm and save myself the cab fare.As I walked home from the city I called Paul Hixon from Loan Market. Paul has been my loan broker for years and I wanted his thoughts on self managed super funds and the decision by some banks to stop lending to them. I wanted to discuss the potential affect to the market and it’s affect, effect on those buyers. His feedback was that there were still a number of banks and institutions that would continue to lend to SMSFs.He said Westpac’s announcement through the week, which was what had spurred my curiosity, to pull out of that market was probably only due to their already large lending in that segment of the market.More from newsNew apartments released at idyllic retirement community Samford Grove Presented by Parks and wildlife the new lust-haves post coronavirus17 hours ago Video Player is loading.Play VideoPlayNext playlist itemMuteCurrent Time 0:00/Duration 6:36Loaded: 0%Stream Type LIVESeek to live, currently playing liveLIVERemaining Time -6:36 Playback Rate1xChaptersChaptersDescriptionsdescriptions off, selectedCaptionscaptions settings, opens captions settings dialogcaptions off, selectedQuality Levels720p720pHD432p432p270p270p180p180pAutoA, selectedAudio Tracken (Main), selectedFullscreenThis is a modal window.Beginning of dialog window. He said banks will pull out of a market segment, including a suburb or style of property, even a particular unit complex if they felt they already had too many loans in that area. After hanging up the phone I thought of all the contracts that crash on finance conditions each week and the heartache from buyers, sellers and agents. Many of those buyers could have had their finance rejected from their lender, thinking it was their financial position or their deposit size or even that they’d just made the wrong choice, when potentially it could just be that institutions decision to just not want that particular loan.Seemingly those buyers could have just gone to another reputable lender with their identical financial profile and received a good loan for that property with no tricks or wizardry. Now each to their own and if you like your lender then that’s part of the decision too. But checking costs you nothing. Questioning my own financial decisions, I had just walked for thirty minutes to save $5 on an Uber, I have always recommended buyers chat to an adviser or broker for the best product for your situation.
