Marking the first worldwide commemoration of cultural diversity, the head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) warned that globalization raised the risk of a dramatic reduction in the variety of civilizations around the world. “Nearly everywhere, under the influence of rampant globalization, languages are falling into disuse, traditions are being forgotten and vulnerable cultures are being marginalized, if not wiped out,” Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura said in a statement to mark the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. This threat to plurality led the UN General Assembly last December to proclaim 21 May the World Day in a bid to raise public awareness of the wealth of cultural variety, in particular, through education and the media. “The earth’s rainbow cannot be reduced to one or other of its colours without compromising the heritage of future generations and the survival of the human species,” Mr. Matsuura said, stressing the paramount importance of the occasion. “Under the UNESCO Constitution, it is our Organization’s duty to promote the fruitful diversity of cultures.” Mr. Matsuura said UNESCO’s Member States undertook, in 2001, to recognize, defend and promote actively the benefits of cultural diversity locally, nationally and internationally by adopting the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, and the 20 main lines of an action plan for a new understanding of the relationship between diversity, dialogue and development. The Declaration is an outstanding tool for dialogue and development, he stated, adding that it is only through cultural plurality that the world can avoid tragic rifts and achieve development sustainability. “Without such an effort, all our attempts for international development cooperation will not be very effective,” Anwarul Chowdhury, who is also Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, told a press briefing in New York.He predicted that the Mauritius International Meeting to Review the Implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, set to run from 30 August to 3 September, would help galvanize international action on the issue. The Mauritius meeting is expected to produce a plan for the further implementation of the 1994 Barbados action plan, he said. “Ten years have gone by and not much has happened and we are wondering why it is so and we are trying to find out how we can do a little bit extra to see that something happens.”In addition, the Mauritius conference will also produce a political declaration providing a broad basis for crafting international development cooperation for the small island development States.”As the Secretary-General of the Conference, it is my intention to see to it that we have a good outcome document, and for that I will make every effort to facilitate the negotiating process,” Mr. Chowdhury said.”I am hoping that the Mauritius meeting will come up with some proactive, strong monitoring elements in the document so that we don’t have to wait for five years or 10 years before we can say whether we have been able to achieve something or not,” he added.”Small islands have a lot of good will from the development partners, from the international community,” he said. “The mood of negotiations has been quite good during these two days, and we would like to maintain that mood and hopefully, we’ll come up with a very good document at Mauritius.” read more
Families of soldiers killed in the IRA bombing in London’s Hyde Park are reportedly taking legal action against a former suspect in the attack.Relatives of two of the four members of the Royal Household Cavalry who died in the 1982 blast said they wanted “justice” for their loved ones.Convicted IRA member John Downey was charged four years ago with the murders, which he denied, but the prosecution at the Old Bailey collapsed in 2014.The case against the Co Donegal man was ended because government officials mistakenly sent him a letter in 2007, as part of a controversial On The Runs (OTRs) scheme, telling him he was no longer a wanted man. The prosecution of John Downey collapsed at the Old Bailey in 2014Credit: Eddie Mulholland for The Telegraph Now Sarahjane Young, daughter of Lance Corporal Jeffrey Young, who was 19 when he was killed, has filed a civil claim at London’s High Court against Mr Downey, The Sun reported. The car bomb left in South Carriage Drive killed Squadron Quartermaster Corporal Roy Bright, 36, Lieutenant Dennis Daly, 23, Trooper Simon Tipper, 19, and Lance Corporal Young and injured others as they rode through Hyde Park to the changing of the guard.Seven horses were also killed as the soldiers travelled from their barracks to Buckingham Palace. Another horse, Sefton, survived terrible injuries. Dead horses covered up and wrecked cars in Hyde Park after an IRA bomb exploded in 1982Credit:PA “We just want to get justice for them, no matter how long that takes.” Backing the claim Mark Tipper, an older brother of Trooper Simon Tipper, told The Sun: “If we can get this man before the courts in some way, it will show the British public at least still believes in justice.”We’ve been let down again and again by the authorities over the past 35 years and, if I’m honest, at times we’ve almost given up hope. EDUCATION MINISTER RUAIRÍ Quinn has said that he was angry that he was misled over who made the decision regarding the site for a location of a primary healthcare centre in Health Minister James Reilly’s constituency.During Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil on Tuesday, Quinn told the chamber that the decision to locate the primary care centre on the site owned by a developer linked to Fine Gael was made during the previous health minister Mary Harney’s tenure. It subsequently emerged that the decision was in fact made last year, during James Reilly’s tenure. This information came to light after officials at the Department of Health double-checked it just before James Reilly made a statement to the Dáil on the matter.“I was told quite clearly that the decision on the location of the site was made by previous Minister for Health Mary Harney. That was wrong,” he told RTÉ’s Today with Pat Kenny.“I was misled, I was angry that I was misled,” he also told the programme saying: “The information that was given was from Minister Reilly’s personal office and it clearly was wrong”.The information was that the site in Balbriggan in north Dublin, which was owned by troubled developer and Fine Gael member Seamus Murphy, was chosen before Reilly came to power.Quinn told the Dáil on Wednesday morning that the site was chosen “by Deputy Mary Harney when she was minister for health” to cheers from the government side of the house. But the information turned out to be incorrect. In fact the site was identified by the Health Service Executive (HSE) last year. ”I wish they had checked before they told me,” Quinn told Pat Kenny this morning. On the same programme he said that he was ”very disappointed” with the departure of junior health minister Róisín Shortall.Read: Reilly insists he had ‘no hand, act or part’ in choice of Balbriggan siteRead: Troika forced Ireland into repaying €1bn AIB bond – QuinnRead: Reilly: I’m not a bully, nothing inappropriate over primary care sites read more

in Daily Dose, Data, Featured, News, Origination Bank of America First-Time Homebuyers Homeownership 2016-05-05 Staff Writer Overcoming the Barriers to Homeownership First-time buyers are often faced with several barriers to homeownership including student loans, down payment savings, and balancing multiple financial priorities, but they ultimately express a desire to own a home.Bank of America’s inaugural Homebuyer Insights Report, which surveyed 1,001 adults throughout the U.S., found that when it comes to purchasing a home, first-time buyers’ views toward homeownership vary but they do want to buy a home.First-time buyers want to skip the starter homes, Bank of America reported. The report showed that 75 percent of first-time buyers want to skip the starter home for something that fits their future needs, even if it means waiting longer and saving more. Meanwhile, 25 percent of respondents indicated that they would rather buy a home that fits their needs now, but not necessarily later in life.Survey respondents noted three reasons for not purchasing a home yet: Can’t afford a home or the type of home they want (56 percent), paying off debt (34 percent), and don’t need a home yet (28 percent).”The reality is that many buyers today are balancing important financial priorities. To them, saving for a home is as important as saving for retirement. And they are considering all of this while they are coping with student loans, credit card debt and college savings for their children,” said D. Steve Boland, Consumer Lending Executive at Bank of America. “That’s likely why the majority of aspiring buyers are expecting some type of support from their parents in buying a home.”According to the survey, 43 percent of Gen-Xers (ages 35-49) have put off purchasing their first home because of debt compared to 32 percent of millennials (ages 18-34). The survey noted that Gen-X homebuyers are balancing a variety of financial situations, including retirement savings (52 percent), credit card debt (40 percent), and saving for their child’s college education (31 percent).Bank of America reported that more first-time buyers are motivated by emotional factors (76 percent) than financial factors (63 percent) when making the decision to buy a home. In addition, homebuyers said that they define homeownership as security (60 percent), responsibility (58 percent), family (58 percent), and happiness (57 percent).”Homebuyers today are motivated by both emotional and practical reasons. Nearly all want more space, but a majority of homebuyers, especially those purchasing their first home, are also looking for a place to call their own, put down roots and make memories,” Boland explained. “They value the emotional benefits of owning a home as much as the financial ones.”First-time buyers indicated in the survey that they plan to make a down payment in the following ways: set aside savings for a home (59 percent), a loan from another source (40 percent), savings which were not set aside fro anything specific (19 percent), anticipated raise/bonus from work (9 percent), and financial windfall (6 percent).”The dream of homeownership is alive and well. Homeownership is still an important goal, and individuals see their home—and the equity they build in it—as an important cornerstone of their everyday life and their overall financial picture,” Boland noted. “The path to homeownership is a journey and can be as overwhelming as it is exciting. We also wrote on Friday that any sort of ninth-inning rally by Brady Hoke had to include a win at Michigan State.Spartans 35, Wolverines 11.Sadly, it was a vintage Hoke vs. Dantonio game, as Michigan turned it over three times, ran for just 2.3 yards a carry and didn’t score a touchdown until it fell behind 28-3.Make sure you see Mark Dantonio’s rant after the game. “We shoved it up their…”These types of demonstrations tend to work better when you’re not 3-4 and riding a “five losses in six games” streak against your quote-unquote little brother.Sparty fans got off quite the troll job on Hoke during the game.Plane flying “KEEP BRADY HOKE” banner over Michigan State: http://t.co/fIGC3jpo8t (via @zeika) pic.twitter.com/ub7mhsWg9x— SB✯Nation CFB (@SBNationCFB) October 25, 2014 – Our Inaugural Band of the Week Award Goes To: Penn State.Penn State band goes with Peter Griffin formation pic.twitter.com/e5YigZUMPQ (via @Jake_Som)— darren rovell (@darrenrovell) October 26, 2014– It wasn’t just that Texas got shutout by Kansas State, it was how it happened. Despite gaining only 196 yards of total offense on the day, the Longhorns reached K-State territory six times in eight drives and never so much as attempted a field goal. That just does not compute. One drive ended in a turnover and another in a turnover on downs, and the other four were punts.– Fake Bo Pelini and Real Rutgers had a nice conversation during the Nebraska-Rutgers game. Nebraska won 42-24 as Ameer Abdullah went off for 225 rushing yards and three touchdowns.pic.twitter.com/Ua8gbResvQ— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) October 25, 2014 AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Sponsored By Connatix In case you missed it, Arkansas threw a fat guy touchdown pass against UAB.– Tim Beckman earned his first Big Ten home win… ever. It may have taken 10 tries, but Beckman earned Big Ten home win No. 1 with a 28-24 upset of 6-1 Minnesota. The Illini were out-gained 411-263 and notched the winning score on a 12-yard fumble return touchdown.– Justin Fuente’s in person audition for the SMU job went well. Memphis blasted SMU 48-10, one week after the Mustangs were beaten 41-3 by Cincinnati in Tommy Tuberville’s audition. For the year, the 0-7 Ponies have been outscored 336-49.– Crazy Box Score of the Week, Part II We’ll stay in Conference USA, where Old Dominion and Western Kentucky combined for 1,244 total yards, 8.58 yards per play, 61 first downs and 117 points in a 66-51 Hilltoppers win.– Seemingly every USC game is a different kind of bonkers. Sark’s bunch beat Stanford by holding them scoreless on (approximately) 25 penetrations inside the 30, then turned around and lost to Boston College. Then they lost to Arizona State on a Hail Mary, and followed that up by nearly giving the Arizona game away before escaping on a missed field goal. This week the Trojans managed to lose after getting stuffed on 4th-and-2 late in the fourth quarter and then allowing Utah to march 73 yards in 11 plays to throw a game-winning touchdown pass with eight seconds remaining.– You’ve got to feel for Mike MacIntyre. Colorado fought back from a 31-14 deficit to take a 37-34 double-overtime lead over UCLA before falling 40-37. The 2-5 Buffaloes have now lost twice in double overtime, and suffered a 36-31 setback to Oregon State.– Pittsburgh had the worst first quarter ever. The Panthers wore throwback helmets honoring the Tony Dorsett era and then went out and started the game like this:Pitt’s 5 fumbles lost (so far) are tied for most in a quarter in FBS history (1980 East Carolina vs UL-Lafayette & 1982 San Diego St vs Cal)— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) October 25, 2014Shockingly, Pittsburgh never recovered from falling in a 28-0 hole, allowing Georgia Tech to run for 465 yards in a 56-28 romp. The Panthers are now 4-4 after a 3-0 start.– There is now a five-way tie for second place in the ACC Coastal. We started the weekend wondering who, if anyone, from the SEC’s middle class would jump up and bite someone in the conference’s upper-echelon. South Carolina gave it a valiant effort, throwing into the end zone for a shot at a tying or winning touchdown at Auburn, but LSU got it done, beating No. 3 Ole Miss 10-7 in Baton Rouge. LSU out-gained Ole Miss 406-313 and gained seven more first downs (22-15) than Ole Miss, managing to win despite losing the turnover battle 4-1. And about that one turnover LSU did force? That came after a delay of game penalty with nine seconds left in the game, which changed Hugh Freeze’s mind to throw for a potential game-winning touchdown from the 30 rather than try a 47-yard field goal with a freshman kicker. Bo Wallace threw into coverage and it was intercepted.Unfortunately, a picture says a thousand words: Hugh Freeze’s reaction after the INT. It wasn’t just that West Virginia went to Stillwater and won by 24, it was the way they did it. The Mountaineers ran for 210 yards on nearly five yards a pop with a 60/40 run-pass split. Holgo was able to lean on the run knowing his team could bully Oklahoma State and rely on his defense, and it worked.West Virginia is now firmly in control of its destiny to win the Big 12. Its only loss (Oklahoma) has two losses, it owns the tiebreaker over Baylor, and it gets both TCU (next week) and Kansas State (Nov. 22) at home, with its only road games at Iowa State and Texas.– Lane Kiffin’s return to Neyland Stadium went well. Lane’s first play from scrimmage in his glorious return was an 80-yard touchdown pass from Blake Sims to Amari Cooper. The Tide’s first three drives traveled a total of 249 yards, and all went for touchdowns. Alabama beat Tennessee 34-20, racking up 469 yards with only six players touching the ball. Although, when one of those players is Cooper (nine grabs for 224 yards and two scores), I guess six the variety you need.– No, seriously, how about some love for Doug Meacham? TCU became the first team to hit the 80-point mark in a conference game, obliterating Texas Tech 82-27 in Fort Worth. Trevone Boykin completed 22-of-39 passes for 433 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions, the running game produced 305 yards on 7.4 yards per carry, and 13 different players caught passes. This was actually a close game for a while. Texas Tech scored a minute into the game, led again at 10-7, and was within 24-17 through one. And then TCU won the final three quarters 58-10.While we’re at it, how about some love for Sonny Cumbie as well? Ten years ago Cumbie quarterbacked Texas Tech to a 70-35 win over TCU, the most points a Gary Patterson-coached team has ever allowed. And now today he helped TCU set a Texas Tech-opponent record.Call me crazy, but the fact that Texas Tech scored 10 points in the final three quarters – and seven of those came in garbage time – and this stat below bother me more than the 82 points.#TexasTech is an impressive minus-11 in turnover margin through 7.5 games. Team was minus-14 last year, minus-13 in 2012.— Aaron Dickens (@AaronDickens) October 25, 2014– Who’s taken his program farther in a year and change, Mark Stoops or Butch Jones? The schedules haven’t been remotely similar – Butch has played four top ten teams in eight games this season, and 12 in his first 20 – but I think I’d take Stoops at this point. Kentucky stood tall against the No. 1 team in the country, and saw its comeback effort thwarted by a bizarre special teams play.– Crazy Box Score of the Week, Part I Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss combined for 802 passing yards and minus-1 rushing yards in a 31-20 Bulldogs win.– Let’s hope every James Franklin-Urban Meyer game is as entertaining as the first one. Ohio State out-scored Penn State 17-0 in the first half, then Penn State out-scored Ohio State 24-0 over the second half and the top of the first overtime, only to see Ohio State close the game on a 14-0 run.
